Our family happened upon the Sebasco Harbor Inn years ago through a magazine article about family vacations and we have never looked back. We have stayed at the inn three times, twice in cabins and once in the main lodge. The inn is a self-contained compound on one of the many peninsulas along the mid-Maine coast and has been in the same family for generations. Although our trips have spanned at least 5 or 6 years, there have always been many familiar faces in both the staff and guests. The compound consists of a central building, the original lodge, 20 or so cabins of varying sizes, two restaurants, a huge salt water pool on a beautiful point, a 9-hole golf course, 2 tennis courts and a large dock with a multitude of water sports available. There are several luxurious inns in Maine, and this certainly isn’t one of them, but you don’t travel to this sort of a family resort for marble bathrooms When we first visited the Inn, I was reminded of a Lodge my family visited many times in my youth on Sebago Lake which is now overly gentrified and exceedingly expensive. There are large cabins (actually former summer houses), which are perfect for groups of 10 or 12, and smaller cabins just perfect for our family of 4. Many of them have direct ocean views. The cabins we’ve stayed in each had two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room with kitchenette. They were clean, comfortable and freshly decorated in a simple but tasteful country style. When I asked the main desk to show me pictures of the interiors of some of the other cabins, I was given a notebook containing detailed pictures of each. The service was prompt, friendly and appropriate. Many of the summer employees were students at Bowdoin College, which is just a few miles away in Brunswick. On one visit, my husband had to meet us a few days late due to a family emergency and the hotel sent a drive down to the airport in Portland to meet him. There were a multitude of day and nighttime activities, which kept both the adults and the kids happy (both when they were little and now that they’re adolescents). The hotel owns a lobster boat, which is used for tours of the Maine coastline; Rowboats and sailboats are also available. We’ve taken a sea kayak tour of the coastline from the hotel (a service offered by a local outdoor adventure company) and were delighted to see harbor seals and bald eagles…. This is a prime wedding location and far more reasonable than some other area locations. We had a water front wedding and our reception at the Maine Maritime Academy also part of Sebasco. Beautiful is all I can really say, fairy tale. One word of wisdom: Watch for golf balls. There are signs everywhere but you don't think about it until one hits the windshield of one of your guests cars :)
